Keep the application active when taking off the GEAR VR Headset
Hello,
Is it possible to keep the game/application running when the Gear VR has switched to standby mode?
I am developing a 360° movie player for Samsung Gear VR. The app contains a gallery with multiple videos of large sizes.
To keep the app size small, the videos itself are being downloaded from the app itself. Because of the large sizes, this will sometimes take a while. On Cardboard or Oculus Rift, the user can lay the device down in the meantime until the video has finished downloading.
However on Samsung Gear VR, the screen turns black when you take of the device. The game then keeps running for about 10 seconds before switching to standby mode. The application will pause at this point, and won't continue until the user puts the device back on.
Is it possible to keep the application running in standby mode? Or is it possible to prevent the Gear VR from turning on standby?
I found Screen.sleepTimeout = SleepTimeout.NeverSleep; , apparently this doesn't even work.
I hope someone can help me with this, i don't want my users to stare at a download bar for 5-10 minutes.
@Bodhid did you find a solution? i don't want gearvr to go in standby mode either because i need the gps readings to trigger a sound in predefined locations (it is for a location based gearvr app i am developing). If you found anything please share it , i am trying to find a solution for days...
There is no way of preventing the GearVR of going to sleep mode. We solved the problem by writing an Android Background Service that uses the build-in download manager.
