Disassembly and assembly of obj model
Hello All,
I am very new to unity and using unity free version.
I have .obj model from Catia. it has 15,000 polygons . I am able to open this model in unity and check all parts.
Now , I want to disassemble bigger parts & assemble as & when required . Further , want to extend this to VR.
Can anyone please describe procedure , how to go ahead?
Regards Jai

You will have to disassemble your model in your 3D software first. You can still export it as 1 big file and import it as a group of objects into unity. Then you'd be able to enable and disable parts and move and rotate them individually. Extending this to VR would just be to add a VR camera to your scene.
I've tried importing as 1 big file. But some parts are combined into one. For example the shaft and the (some) ball bearings are a single mesh while other ball bearings are another mesh.
I am using Soliworks and saved the assembly file as single .stl. Then I converted the .stl file to obj, and dae using meshlabs and both result in the same meshing.
I'm still looking for alternatives to disassembling the model in 3D software.
Sorry for late reply. Hope you found a solution, But it really doesn't matter how you generated the model. Unity works on a per mesh basis. Unless you want to get very complicated and move specific vertices in your scene. So you need to split up the needed parts in your 3D software before import for them to work independently in unity.
