Question by Caruzo · Oct 30, 2015 at 11:49 PM · updatequit

Press Escape, quit game if variable is false otherwise... How?

Sup guys,

I have the following situation:

 public bool subMenuClicked = false;

 void Update() {
     if (Input.GetKey (KeyCode.Escape)) {
          if(subMenuClicked == false) {
               Application.Quit();
          }
          else {
              //Some codes for disabling buttons and submenu
              subMenuClicked = false;
          }
     }

This code should leave the game if ESC is clicked in case of not having a submenu opened, and leave the submenu (disabling the panel and buttons) if submenuClicked variable is true. I need to change the value of this variable back to false once the submenu is closed so my ingame time can carry on going (it stops when subMenuClicked is true and vice versa).

However, what happens is - it successfully closes the game if a submenu is not opened. But if there is a submenu opened, it first closes it (as it should do) but then also quits the game. How to make it stop quitting the game?

I think the issue is that the variable is changed while the escape is clicked because the whole code block stated above is in the Update function, which as far as I know updates every frame. I am pretty sure this is the issue but I dont know how to change it :(

Any help/ideas are appreciated!

Thank you :)

This will be because you are Using GetKey which just says, "Is the key down" the problem is that most key presses will last more than 1 update, unless your just a really quick tap.

What you want to use is Input.GetKeyDown instead. That way it will only return true once, on the first update of the press and not constantly.
