Documentation about tiles

Where can I find documentation regarding setting up a tilemap?

I did the roguelike tutorial, but it wasn't good enough for me because it places tiles in random order. I want to build a fixed map, but couldn't find any tutorial or documentation about it. Also, I don't want to use plug-ins (I want to practice it using a script).

Anyone know of a good source to learn from?
