What version do I have?
I installed Unity 3 and I use Unity for iPhone. When I go to the about Unity menu, it says 1.7.0f1 (38208). Is this 3? It looks the same as it did before I installed. How do I find out?
Thank you.

Sounds like you opened the old iPhone build - sure you clicked the new shortcut?
I'll check, I'm on a mac and I assumed it put it in applications\unity\iphone unity
Since 3.0 is a general purpose (not iphone specific) editor, it's just in /Applications/Unity/Unity.app now

For Unity 3, you can do the switch from Unity itself to make it to iPhone build from the Build Settings by switching the platforms. It is not a separate file.
