retro games

You might have heard of Broforce already. If not, here it is: http://www.85play.com/unity-3d-games/16359/broforce.html. Now it appears this game has been made in Unity3d, proving that it is definitely possible to get these kind of retro graphics and gameplay in Unity. Does anyone know how I should get started in Unity if I want to create a game with similar graphics? I've heard of RagePixel, but I think that's a little too basic if you want to create a big pixel art world. Are there any other, more efficient ways to get this done? Is it, for example, possible to draw something in GIMP and implement it in Unity?

Of course :) is the simple answer.

I use GIMP for my texturing in Unity. Not sure what Broforce looks like cuz its taking forever to load but, if you want 2D game, use orthographic camera and draw your textures with alpha transparency. When you slap this on a plane or thin cube transparency works nicely and you see through redundant parts of the 'model'.

Bigpixel/blocky graphics are easy to implement simply by making them small and scaling them up without antialiasing. You must consider though that Unity does not do proper 2D, but what everyone seems to like to call 2.5D or pseudo-2D which is actually just 3D shot in orthographic and 1 axis zeroed.
