'Forward-scroller' game?

First off, I just want to preface this by saying I only started using Unity today, and am pretty much a beginner on every front, with only a year or two of prior programming experience (and only a little of that), so I want to apologise if I sound stupid or am retreading easily-found ground, but I really have no idea how to search for a topic regarding this.

I've had a few game ideas, and one of probably the more interesting ones is some kind of 'forward-scroller' where you control a character moving through a circular-ish tunnel, shooting enemies along the way and stuff like that. Kind of like Temple Run but circular around the whole screen, and with 2D graphics. I've also thought about it kind of like a Star Fox game except in a tunnel. Basically I'm a beginner to this sort of thing and while I could easily find tutorials on simple side-scrollers and platformers, something like this isn't really something I know how to find. All I really want to know is: Is this a manageable thing to achieve with Unity? And how would you implement a 2D graphics style in a game like this with a scrolling sprite-based cave environment? Would it be programmed in a 2D or 3D environment, and how (loosely) could I go about doing that?

I'm not planning to start by doing a project like this seeing as I just started, I just want to know if and how this is achievable.
