The question is answered, right answer was accepted
WHy would a child gameobject just fly away from its parent?
I only manipulate the parent gameobject using position, rotate, velocity and drag. As the game runs the parent is given velocity to move along the z axis(blue arrow). From the start the child object moves away and then wildly rotates around the parents center point but the distance gets greater.
maybe its rotation is different to the parent. Go to the child and reset the rotation
Perhaps some of your code is producing unexpected results? Since you didn't post any, it's impossible to say what your problem is with any certainty. All you're going to get is a bunch of stabs in the dark.

The child was a rigidbody. I deleted that component. All is well now. I could have checked ISKinematic also to achieve the same thing.
