Update Terrain alphamap as player walks

My terrain has two layers, grass and dirt. I need the layer to change to dirt temporarily when the player moves over it and then change back to the base layer.
Using the script about successfully modify the alpha and reveals the other texture, but in small splotches.
terrain.terrainData.SetAlphamaps(mapX, mapY, element);
the other part is expanding the radius of the effected X, Y
I am fairly new with unity. Part of my issue is not knowing what to google.
