What is cheaper: trail renderers or particle effects?

I have a flying game and want to have a trail behind the player and projectiles. We can either use a particle emitter to create a smoke-like trail, or a trail renderer to create a more smooth trail. For performance reasons, I was wondering if the trail renderer is significantly cheaper than the particle effect, or vice-versa?
