How can I create a simple splash screen?

I was curious if there are some simple ways to make a simple splash screen before your game, one similar to the "unity" one that fades in, and then fades out before loading your game.

I tried to adjust an images alpha through code, but it kept crashing so I figured there must be a better way to do it. Any suggestions?
