              Converting Heightmap to Sphere
I am working on creating a simulation of Mars. To start off with I want to use realistic terrain information that I can obtain directly from NASA in the form of a Digital Terrain Model (DTM). This is almost exactly the same as a standard height map which provides elevation data from an agreed upon "global height".
My goal is to take these DTM's and use them to generate a mesh that can represent the surface of Mars. Ideally I would like to be able to support multiple levels of detail as well. I am not sure what the best method is to approach this problem. Any information or pointer that could be provided would be very helpful.
