Changing an objects material by clicking GUI button

I have a GUI button that turns on and off a light. The light has a self illuminated material on it with a spot light under it to make it look like it is glowing. I am looking for a way to change the material of the object so that when I click the GUI button to turn the light off the material changes from the self illumation to a standard material and stops glowing. Thanks.
