Everything above the player to be semi-transparent
I'd like everything above the player in certain screen area to either disappear or become semi transparent (circular area shape a plus). I thought about using two cameras with different culling masks but that would only put the player above everything else, which isn't my goal. I have no idea if it's possible, but maybe using something like light cookies on a camera would work?

I have honestly never played with shaders but that is the area I believe you want to be looking at to solve this! (I have been trying to figure this out since I saw this question such a great idea!)
This question nearly does what you want but makes them white so maybe with some tweaking you could display it as clear maybe?

I hope this helps!
