Realistic weapon movement with the character

Currently I'm working on a 3D RPG game with 2D characters (think of Paper Mario) And I'm in the process of creating the weapon for the character. And I would like the weapon to be a separate thing to the character, as there will be many weapons, and it's a pain to add every animation to every weapon if it was a one object. I know how to make the sword as a separate object and that it follows the character. But I'm not sure how to make it so it's more accurate with the character, for example... The character spins attack, so I would like the sword to spin/rotate around the character, so it's not so static and it looks more lively

If you make one animation for one weapon, you can apply it to many weapons. Since I assume you'll be spawning the weapon programmatically, you can attach an Animator programmatically as well.
Or do I misunderstand?
