How would I go about moving a player back to a specific location?

So I've been working on this game for a few weeks now. You essentially move a block forward and avoid the obstacles and environmental dangers. Recently I added a split screen scene, in which two cameras follow two players who can collide with one another and complete the level. I'm trying to make it so when one player dies, they teleport or move back to 0f at 'z'. However I'm not sure how to approach. I tried just rebuilding the scene like any other level but then that resets it for both players (I want the other to keep moving and hopefully win). Most recently I tried checking on an Update() function if either player had collided, and if yes it would "object.transform.Translate(0f, 0f, -object.position.z);", so using the negative value of the players current distance, I would return them back to the start. However this does nothing. Both players can lose lives but they are simply not moved back to 0f. Any suggestions are very welcome at this point, for amendments or even just new ideas I should try to achieve he effect. For anyone unsure I think you could describe the desires system as similar to Mario Karts and how their 'death' system works. I'm a few weeks into Unity but maybe a year into programming. Any help really appreciated!
