Trouble with "Creating Screen Transitions" UI How To

I'm trying to follow this using Unity 5.3.4f1 personal
It's a bit hard to follow since it doesn't really outline each step, and I'm a little rusty with Unity since I haven't been working with it lately.
The howto doesn't mention if the screens should be panels or canvases or panels attached to the same canvas or anything.
I set up the animator controller as it shows, but the UI looks different, and there is an "entry" state transitioning into closed. Also, my animation window shows nothing, so I can't make the single keyframe the howto mentions. Also, the inspector looks much different with no "atomic" and instead a check box for "has exit time", with a drop down for many various settings, and shows no animation.
I created the ui elements and the scripts and set the On Click() element on the button to screenmanager, but am completely unable to assign anything to it. It just says None(Animator),and I'm not entirely sure what I need to assign to it. I assume it's the panel I want to transition to, but that's not working.
Ocassionally I get a "ArgumentException: failed to convert parameters" error, but it's not consistent and I'm not sure what causes it.
Any assistance is highly appreciated.
