Question by Dragondean · May 27, 2018 at 02:11 PM · gameobjectcolorprogrammingplanecolor change

change color of part of plane

I am making a game where you can place an object in this plane. But I want part of the plane to change color where the game object is and a little bit around it. How would I do this?

If you mean you have one plane and you want to change part of it's colour, I don't think this can be done, at least there's not a way I can think of. However, if you have a number of planes and you want only one to change colour at a certain point, I have a way that I think may work, and this is by using a renderer.

1) Go ahead and add a mesh renderer to your planes if you haven't already got one (you should have one though).

2)You will then need to create a new script which will be attached to all your planes (unless you already have one). The code I am going to be suggesting is in C# by the way.

3)Now delcare a renderer by using the code 'private Renderer rend', where 'rend' is any name for the renderer you want. You will also need to create the colours that you want to use on your plane, in this case, i'll be calling mine 'colour1' and 'colour2', so now declare them by using 'public Color colour1' and the same for the other colour.

4)Now going back to the editor, when you save your script you will see the two colours you declared show up. You can then go ahead and set the colours here.

5)Going to the script again, you need to find your renderer that is used in the planes. To do this, use 'rend = GetComponent();' and remember that 'rend' is whatever you declared the renderer as. Set the default colour of the plane by using ' rend.material.color = colour1;'

6) So now when you want to change the colour of a plane, (assuming that you already have a way to detect when an object is over your plane), just add 'rend.material.color = colour2', or the same with colour1.

Hopefully this is what you were looking for and I didn't lose you in that explanation :D This is the same way I use to change the colour of my platforms in my tower defence game, so I'm not too sure if this will work for you or not, but hopefully it does!
