Question by iamtomhewitt · Sep 07, 2017 at 12:20 PM · adsadvertising

Can I use Unity Ads on a certain game?

I've created a game that's based on a classic game. The difference is, mine is in virtual reality.

I've published it the Google Play Store, and it's doing well, hitting around 150,000 total downloads so far. It is a free game, and due to its popularity, I was wondering if I can put Unity Ads within it?

I know I can physically, but I was wondering if I am allowed to do this seen as though it is based off a game that has already been done?

Any thoughts would be great! :-)

<--- not a lawyer>

This is mostly going to depend on which game it is and how closely based on the original game your game is.

Is it a classic game that no one holds the rights to (chess, checkers, etc.)? Obviously should be fine.

Is it a classic game like $$anonymous$$onopoly? You are going to need to make sure you aren't using any copyrighted or trademarked names, phrases, assets, images, etc. $$anonymous$$eep in $$anonymous$$d that the look and feel of the game can also be copyrighted, apparently.

You are also going to need to make sure your game is sufficiently unique that you don't run afoul of the Play Store agreement -- Google tends to take down clones when they get noticed, unlike Apple which tries to prevent them from going up in the first place.

Here is an interesting example of the opposite scenario.

The game leans towards those like Space Invaders and Pacman, and the style of my game is quite similar. Perhaps it is wise to stay away from Unity Ads for this game for the time being.

Thanks for your help!

If it is not an exact copy of that game, I don't see any reason why you couldn't do that. However, be sure to check their policy here: https://unity3d.com/legal/ads-publishers-terms-of-service
