Power consumption because of compass and gyroscope on handheld devices

Does it require a lot more power to read these inputs from handheld devices (Android/iOS)? or can these be pulled a lot of times pr. second without using noticable power from the battery?

I mean, GPS/navigation systems usually eats a lot of power, dont they - or was that 10 years ago?
