Dynamic sorting objects on terrain
Basically I'm trying to place objects on a terrain, then be able to dinamically sort them on the surface from an in-game interface.
If someone already has any suggestion, please share it, otherwise read the following example... thanks!!
So maybe it's better I explain it with an example: I have an inventory of objects - actually whatever object would just be fine- the important is that every object is different and each can be identified by different parameters attached to it (in order to sort the inventory someway). So a basic inventory, like of weapons of different classes, with different names and abilities, and they can be sorted on the inventory through those different parameters.
But let's try with trees: once my different trees have already been placed on the terrain in the editor, I would like my character to be able to open an interface with a list of all the trees laying on the ground (unsorted) and then sort that list through one or more parameters (e.g. sort by class of tree, time of placing, objectID etc...); till here I think it can be done by interface operations and worldtoscreen scripts (correct me if that's not even the case).
The complicated part starts now, I suppose: I would like to see all those trees I've sorted in the interface, but now displayed with the same order on the surface, like by assigning each object on the interface list an ordinal number and then project this order onto the terrain, like on a grid made of n squares already ordered from 1 to n.
So now my trees should all move from were they were placed (randomly as I placed them in the editor at first) and take each one a given position onto the grid, stay there sorted as the player decided, and let the character walk through them.
The aim is to create a forest that changes according to the player's choices of sorting, kind of... Is that even possible?
As some probably already guessed, I'm just a newbie and with very basic knowledge, but if anyone would kindly tell me if that's at least possible and how could I achieve it even though not at my current level, well I'll learn harder to reach that point -and (as little as it can be as a reward) always be glad to those who helped me!!
