Question by adamcarter1182 · Oct 19, 2015 at 09:33 AM · networkingrenderinglightmapping

Can my team use our dedicated render farm PCs to build lightmaps in Unity 5

Hello, My team currently uses 4 beefy laptops to act as a "render farm" for animations rendered in 3DS Max and also for building lighting in our scenes built with UDK or Unreal Engine 4. I don't know the nitty gritty of how it works other than all the PCs have to be on the same network with a 3dsmax installation, or for use with UDK or UE4, the swarm agent for lightmass. We have run into some long build times in Unity 5, and with UDK/UE4 we had long build times as well until we integrated the "render farm." Does Unity 5 have something similar in place that can be used to build the scene lighting with Enlighten and cut down build time?

I found this question in searching for the same. I only have 1 computer at the moment, but after having waited for 5 hours for a simplified lightmap for my terrain (just to get a feel of how it will eventually look) and it's only around 60% of the way, I decided to look into networked lightmap baking. First I found your post. No answers, so not all that helpful to me, however I went further, and it doesn't seem to be a native feature, however we aren't the first to be in this precarious situation, and others in our situation have apparently decided to do something about the lack of network baking.

As said, I only have 1 computer, so I haven't actually tested this, however I hope it is of use to you, please let me know how it goes! =)
