Need help slicing 2D sprites along a grid

Hi,

I am a student working on a small puzzle game demo. I want to slice my sprites/objects based on a finger swipe (similar to fruit ninja), but I am trying to make sure that the swipes snap to a grid system so that the pieces the player cuts can be dragged and dropped into a Diablo/Path of exile style grid

I have an example image here that shows the types of puzzles I want to create. The idea is that players can only cut along the lines of the grid, so that the parts they cut off can be dragged easily and perfectly into the open grid spaces. In the example, each color is a place that would be cut away from the rest.alt text

Any help or pointers are GREATLY appreciated!! If you have seen any tutorials that cover these topics, I would also love to see them!

Thank you!

What have you tried so far?

I have looked into drag and drop style ui's and inventory systems. I have looked into sprite slicing as well. I am totally new though so I am a bit lost.
