It might not be the case but be sure to check your quality settings under project settings.

You may or may not have done this already, but here's my solution.

  1. Click on the terrain in the hierarchy (or in the scene view) to bring up its menu

  2. Go under 'Textures', where you have selected the textures to paint

  3. Double-click on the texture that you have a problem with

  4. This should bring up a window called "Edit Terrain Texture". Find the value "Size"

  5. Edit this value. I think it looks good at approximately 500. This heightens definition

It may be the L.O.D. function that only comes with Unity Pro. This stands for "Level of Detail", and it means that the closer you get to a textured area, the higher that the definition of that texture becomes. That is how professional games made with Unity get their H.D. textures.

It may also be wanting a shader or renderer that seem to increase definition.

i would shy away from your second method, as this will tax the GPU due to a much larger texture size that is simply repeating the existing texture.

Hey. If your terrain was fine, it could be that you changed shader of material terrain uses ? Either try to remove the material terrain uses (Click on terrain > Wrench icon > Material and see did that fix the problem or see is your material using proper shader.

If you change shader from Nature/Terrain ones to some other stock one (not including terrain shaders that are on the market), terrain textures will get blurry. Example > Nature\Terrain \Diffuse and simple Diffuse are not the same.
