Reflections stacking

I have some sprites with normal maps attached, and light reflects off of them appropriately. However, when I stack a bunch of the sprites on top of each other, the reflected light stacks (rather than being the same intensity as if it were just one sprite), so that the highlighted areas are extremely bright. I do not want this! Suggestions for how to make a stack of items reflect light the same way a single item would?
