Making 3d/Mesh Particles for realistic cloud/explosion effects
I want to recreate something that I saw in the latest Zelda: Breath of the Wild gameplay. These super cool 3d clouds!

You see them when he chops down trees, or when enemies explode. I really want to recreate that look, but I'm not sure how it is made. They don't appear to be made from 2d sprites. From talking with other developers, we figure that it is an instantiation of a group of meshes, which have some sort of dissolve shader on them. I'm going to start experimenting today, but I wondered if anybody had any tips for this sort of thing. Thanks, in advance!
