Question by Nodgorod · Aug 29, 2016 at 01:42 PM · unity 5photonpublishinglicensing

My first game and I want to publish it what do i need?

Hey, I've been working with Unity for some time and lately I've created a game which I would like to upload and make it available for people. I'm even looking forward to making some revenue out of it, but before I launch myself in any kind of action I would like to know precisely for the following things: - do I need a license in order to publish? -should I record my application in any database or at all? -if I've used for the multiplayer system Photon Unity Networking should I need a license?

I might have not asked everything , but overall I would like to know as well which is the course of action in order to publish my game legally and without breaking any kind of conditions!! Please, I need a realiable solution!

P.S: if you could give me useful links concerning this issue, it would another advantage

To start off, congratulations on your first game.

Now, to be a bit realistic: Don't expect to become a millionaire.

As far as unity goes, if you're using the "Free" edition, you can publish your game anywhere, and to anyone. If you make more than $100k, you'll need to update to atleast the Plus (Up to $200k). Anything more than $200k, you'll need Unity Pro, which has no cap.

As far as Photon Networking, I believe their free account is fine, however, is highly limited. You'll need to check their site out as far as what they require.

As Cynikal said, Photon has différents plans depending on the number of users and the amount of data : Photon Pricing

For Unity the free Licence is fine to start, you'll have to pay only if you start making revenue above 100k$ : Unity Pricing

Unfortunatly there is no central authority on wich to register/upload your game. The place you put it is totally up to you, for exemple you could upload freely on one of those sites :

  • Itch.io : one of the most used for indie games

  • Indiexpo : less known one, but same principle

(if somebody has more put it in the comment i'll had them to the list)

These are the one i've delt with, but you could also try and get it greenlighted on Steam if you're confident in your game.

If your game is for Android you can publish on the Play store for a one time fee of 25$, after which you can publish as much as you want/need.

If you have your own website you can put it there but i doubt you'll have much coverage.

The most important is that you people to play your game, so tell people about it (Facebook, Twitter, forums, ect ...).

I hope that helps you. Congratulation on your first game ! And keep going, it's by making games that you learn how to make better games.
