Maya Animations getting only partially lost in Unity

Core information:
I'm using Maya 2017 and Unity 2017.3.1 on a Windows 10 system

Hi everyone!
I am a student and still fairly new to maya, Unity etc.. I might have a good basic knowledge going but please forgive me if any of my questions/statements seem very obvious to you.

For a course project I did some models with very basic animation.
I modelled a heart in Maya and then animated it beating. Because of the narrative, only the upper part of the heart was supposed to be beating. To accomplish the desired effect I selected the faces of the heart's upper shape (all that should be moved) and then set keyframes for them being in their usual shape, the faces slightly scaled up to make it look like the shape expands and back to normal size.

In Maya this looked perfectly fine.

When I tried importing it into Unity though the animation just disappeared. I went to search for a solution and tried everything I could think of or find online.

Key points:

  • keyframes on the according faces are visible when faces are selected

  • animation is visible in the according editor windows e.g. the Graph editor

  • animation is visible and playable in Maya

  • after exporting into fbx the animation is lost. The model inside unity does carry the animation clip, but it's basically just a still image.

  • I had the same problem with a little creature, but with a small difference that might offer helpful information: I animated the creature as a whole (jumping up and down just by keying the transform values for the object) and parts of it via the same 'faces-method', selecting needed faces and keying them into the positions I wanted them to be in. Exporting THAT object resulted in a model in Unity, with an animation clip attached, which only showed the Up/Down movement - All adjustments to faces were lost.

What I've tried:

  • baking the animations in Maya before the export

  • baking the animations during the export

  • baking the animations before and during the export

  • using all kinds of different settings for the baking

  • using all kinds of different settings for the fbx export

Nothing worked so far.

Is it just a fact that keyframed faces are not compatible with Unity or to be exported via .fbx files? Has anyone ever gotten an animation like that to work in Unity?

Best wishes & thank you in advance for your time and effort! Kristina
