Light that Doesn't Need to Be Reflecting Off Object
How can I make a light (that will function as a flashlight) that still lights a region without anything to reflect off? Most of the time in my game the player is walking down an empty trail, so of course if they look forward there are no walls for the light to reflect off resulting in no illumination. Is there any way to change this so that there is always some illumination?
I dont think I uderstand. You should not need walls to light up, say the path, or a tree. As long as there is nothing that casts shadows between your light source, and the object you want to light, the object SHOULD be lit. There are ways to explicitly PREVENT certain objects from being affected by certain lights, like LAYERS: perhaps something like this is whats going on for you?

You're looking for "volumetric lighting", which simulates a volume of light as might be reflected off dust particles in the atmosphere . There's plenty of examples available: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=volumetric+light+unity
