Why editor extension is so slow?
I am working on an editor extension. I have some time consuming algorithms and factored them out to a separate project and make it to the extension as a DLL and use it in the extension project. The algorithms are not dependent on Unity and DLL has no reference to Unity.
Here are my findings. Using the DLL inside:
a standalone .NET project is very fast because of better CLR. Takes 1100ms to complete.
a standalone PC unity game (.exe) takes 2100ms to complete.
an editor extension is slowest. Takes 2700ms.
The main issue is the difference between (2) and (3). I want my extension to run as fast as a unity PC build. I tried playing around with gmcs and smcs .rsp files in Asset folder with no luck. Any suggestions?
