Have Animator ignore parameters, pass Animation state manually?

I'm having an issue with online player's animators bugging out.

I have players controlled locally using parameters set in scripts, but online I would like to be able to pass the current animation and set it using the name, and I'd like to have non-local animators on players disregard parameters completely.

Sending all the parameters to non-local players results in some animation states getting skipped and the player bugging out.

Is there a way to have the "Animator" component behave more like the legacy "Animation" component, and just manually set animations by name, and not have the Animator tree and its parameters interfere?
