work reliably on iOS devices? Thanks twice!!
I didn't think it was enough of an answer. But if that's all you needed, awesome
it's the best answer in days, and nobody else seems interested in any production matters like this, so yeah! thanks!

Here's some info: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/83179-Questions-about-maximum-texture-size-can-be-used-in-iOS. It looks like 4096 would be too big for iPad 3...
something's wrong somewhere, because I use 4096 as a matter of course on ipad3, but the info is tops and I'll look in to it thanks!
You managed to get 4096 textures working? That GLES spec from Apple is what said 2048. I gotta start messing with iPad more myself...!
lately we had to do some 2D jobs, and quite simply in 2DToolkit, you can use a 4096 texture (for iPad3). Works perfectly. I'm looking in to it more.

yep , in my case :
4096 x 4096 runs ok on an ipad 4
whereas 2048x2048 is as most as I can get in a iPad2 , mini.
