Changing skin weights in maya destroys character prefab

I have a character prefab that I made from an .fbx file, exported from Maya. It worked fine.

I went back into maya and changed a few of the skin weights on the .fbx and saved. Now when I pull up my prefab, it's incredibly deformed.

Any suggestions? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have also had problems with blender to unity. Have you imported it as a humanoid? I found that the problems went away when it wasn't humanoid so you could try that if possible.
