Using multiple 2d rigs for one character?

Is there a way, I could use different rigs for the same character?

Animations using sprite "parts" work very well for similar motions, such as walking, where the translations and rotations aren't too forced. But in case I want to have my character do a special attack, where the motions and body parts change quite a bit, I would see the benefit in creating another rig with a different sprite, is there a way I could seamlessly do this with unity? use a rig for one action, and change to other for another, different action?
