What do I need to know to do this?
Good day.
This question is literally me trying to understand what specific knowledge I need, so I don't have to spend too much time learning irrelevant things.
I have an idea which I want to prototype, of a 2-dimensional casual game. PC-oriented. Within it part of the screen (think top half) is to be occupied by animated action (as in a 2d-fighter), and the rest of the screen occupied with HUD/pertinent information.
The 2-d action is to be semi-independent (like in Punch Club), all the variables the player can influence are set before the action takes place (so I'm guessing, investing time in AI is a priority).
What would I have to know, and which tutorials (if anyone can be bothered to detail) or courses would I need to take to make this particular prototype by myself?
Thank you.

You need to learn about UI, mock-up your design will be a good practice. You also need to learn about Animator, and Animator State Machines, as a good part of visual feedback can be achieved with it. Unity Events may help you too. And software architecture, like abstract classes inheritance and interfaces implementation, can be good. And yes, like you said, AI / RPG like will be important too. Good luck!
