Creating an Interactive Light Panel/Screen
I'm having some trouble coming up with a strategy to create an interactive light panel to act as the floor in my game. Think of a dancefloor where each panel/pixel is capable of being individually lit or changed color on demand at runtime. I'm thinking something along these lines, where each hexagon can be controlled exclusively. I'm looking to be able to overlay shapes to light up areas of the screen, and turn off those areas when the player visits them.
The trouble is I can't think of an efficient way to set this up, either in engine or in Maya/Substance. Short of modelling each pixel individually and importing as seperate objects (no thanks) I'm at a loss. I have been considering using emission maps for it, but I think I would need to have a separate material for each pixel in order to edit their individual emission values exclusively.
Can anyone think of a clean way of creating this? If I haven't been clear please ask for more info! Thanks
