Importing free 3d characters -- why doesn't it work in unity?
I am trying to import and use this model (as well as many others):
https://free3d.com/3d-model/high-elf-1360.html
So I download it and import it into Unity 3d and I can see a nice model and I can even see animations complete with an avatar. And yet I can't get the animations that come with the model to work on the model. I have tried generic and humanoid and many other permutations to no avail. I can even get the animations to work on other models (such as ones from Maximo), so I know they work. They just don't seem to work with the model they came with. Can someone please explain what I am doing wrong here?
It appears to be rigged when I go to the rigged tab. And it's in a T-pose. And as I mentioned already, it comes with its own animations (which don't actually work in Unity for me with the model, but do work on other models) which suggests they creator thought it was rigged.
I noticed later I'm getting an error that it can't find 3ds $$anonymous$$ax.
"3ds $$anonymous$$ax could not be found. $$anonymous$$ake sure that 3ds $$anonymous$$ax is installed and the max file has 3ds $$anonymous$$ax as its 'Open with' application! "
I was not aware I had to own 3ds $$anonymous$$ax to import a mode from it. Is that really the case? Or is it looking for an engine component and not finding it?
I'm still pretty new to Unity, so I realize it might just be something really stupid that I'm falsely assu$$anonymous$$g. It's happened before.
