particle system not visible in game view

I can't get particle systems to show up in the game view of my project (2D), no matter what. I've looked at every discussion thread I could find about similar problems and tried every suggested solution, to no avail. At the moment I've disabled EVERYTHING except the camera and the particle system. They are the only active objects in the project, and I still don't see anything.

What can I do to further narrow down the possible causes?
