What is the unity reference helper script?
I upgraded my project from 5.0 to 5.3 and these scripts got auto added to some of my objects.
I removed some of them out of curiosity. Now when loading, 1 out of 5 times half of my links are broken and set to 'none'.
What is this and how come google returns nothing? And if they are important how come you can remove them?
Thanks
Wow, youre right, a Google search produced nothing but your question. You sir are a pioneer ;)

You most likely are using Aron Granberg's A* pathfinding framework. This script most likely should help that system to keep track of that gameobject and store additional instance information.
Yes you're right! I also updated the A* library at the same time and didn't realise that it was connected. I should have just double clicked on the script but I thought that because it was greyed out that I couldn't, but you can.
Now I think that the other problem about the unlinking references is a separate question.
