Kayak physics

Hello everybody! I need to write a controller for a demo in which there's a kayak and I'm able to move it. Does anybody know the physics (simple is ok) to move it, including paddles? I'm new to this kind of things, your help will be really appreciated! :D

This is kinda interesting. :)

I don't have a solution, but want to put my thoughts here. I guess you would have a composition of different things here:

  • A constant force from the current of the river

  • The above will also turn the kayak towards the flow direction (I think)

  • Impulses from the paddles when they are pushed through the water which will rotate the kayak (depending on the side) and also propel it forwards a bit

  • the paddles would also rotate and slow down the kayak if they are only held into the water

  • I don't think the normal physics will support much of this (as were my experiences in the past with even simpler things), so I guess you would need to simulate those by scripting them and using AddForce()

thanks for commenting! By now, I'm looking for a basic physic to let the kayak float on water (I've read a fantastic article on Gamasutra) . Later I'll try implementing what you said. Other than this, do you know if there are any physics equations for the paddles to make it more realistic?
