Optimize Terrain: Paint Holes or Use a Non-Textured Terrain Layer?
I have a terrain where many parts are hidden and inaccessible to due mountains, etc., and I'd like to essentially "trim" this part of the terrain to optimize baking and overall performance - the question is: should I use holes? or a simple, non-textured terrain layer?
Holes look like what I want, but I know this is just painting a texture with 0 opacity, which isn't necessarily light-weight.
Here's what I had in mind for an "empty" texture: 
Any thoughts on what would give me the biggest performance boost?
