How to add a picture to the model material?

Hi everyone,

I've got a little problem with adding an image to the back of my character. I want to edit the material and add an image(but i don't know how to do this) or find another simple way to make it work. I've made a cube with material which contains my image and attach to the character, but it's not what i'm looking for.

So I've got only one question: How to do that? :)
