convenient way for character animation? (2D side scroller game with over 70 character)
Hi, We are creating a 2D side scroller game and it has over 50 characters and each character has 10 actions. We are concerned about the final output size. Which way is more convenient?
1.Using png sequences for each character? (there will be lots of png sequence)
Using simple 3D planes and texture maps with rig and animation data,
Import each character as a sprite in unity and rig and animate the character in unity?

Probably not the answer you are looking for, but... The end results are going to be radically different. So what you are really asking is rigged 2d animation (gives cartoon like results) vs animated sprites (gives oldschool style). It is a matter of art direction, design and artistic taste. I recommend consulting your artists, asking what they prefer and go with that.
Also you don't mention the size of sprites, I'll assume it is something reasonable like 64x64 or 128x128. There should be no issues. Early optimization is the worst optimization ;) Fix the size problem when you get there, if you ever do, as there are many solutions and techniques you can use to lower the size of your game.
