The correct way to import 3d models
What is more correct for Cinema4d: Export model to fbx or copy c4d file to the Unity project and let Unity to export it to fbx itself?

As a user noticed yesterday, for some formats, Unity has a problem sorting them out on its own, but it seems to always properly import FBX files. (The user had a problem with Blender; don't know how Cinema4D works out.)
If you have FBX export capability, always use it, because in my experience Unity has never had an FBX problem, but has had problems with other formats.
However, if your model doesn't have any animations, exporting to OBJ works just fine as well.

i always let unity handle the export from a c4d file; so far i haven't had any problems with that.
sometimes the normals are a bit strange (which is mostly the fault of my modelling skills i think), but the option 'recalculate normals' can deal with that.
just remember to bake your textures and save your file via "save project", that way you can drop the whole folder into unity without having to manually assign your textures to the materials.
