Question by sandhillceltic · Jan 01, 2014 at 11:50 PM · animationmotion-trackingmotion-capture

Any good mocap programs?

I am aware that this isn't a Unity specific question, but it does apply to making games.

Can anyone find a mocap program out there that is free?

I have gone through hours of research trying to find one, but I can not.

any help is good!

Thanks

i dont think you understand how mocap works. :P

its not just a camera, its a special high speed camera, you need quite a few of them set up to capture the full range of motion.

then you need to wear a special suit, the suit has infrared emitting colored points at various points like the elbows, wrists, knees etc to denote where each is during the motion.

$$anonymous$$otion capture is a 10,000 dollar expedition at $$anonymous$$imum, if you have it as a game studio you've made it big. Alot of the ones that use it rent out a mocap studio from a movie studio or another game studio for example when there not using it.

Be aware that mocap is not an instant solution to all animation requirements. Even if you were to use a top-of-the-range dedicated motion capture studio, the resulting data typically needs a lot of cleanup prior to making it game-ready. Your hours spent searching for a free solution might have been better spent hand-coding the animations yourself ;)

However, there are certainly cheap mocap software available that make use of consumer webcams, Kinects etc. - the most common that I know of being http://ipisoft.com/

The dev$$anonymous$$m behind Sattelite reign use ipisoft software. Here's a youtube video showing how they use it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRqrGl308JY

They use 4 playstation eye cameras, and you can probably make do with the basic ipisoft lisence for $600 ($416 if you buy it before january 5 apparenly). 4x playstation eye might be $20*4=$80. So about $680 in total.
