About how many pixels does the average user need before they can efficiently see and tap an object?

I am making a puzzle game and originally had a 'zoom' feature, but I would really rather have everything fit on the screen-- even if it has to be at a 'minimum' size.

Each of the game objects has a hieroglyph on it, and it is very self-explanatory and colored. For instance, one has a red 'X' on it. Another has a green square.

Instead of worrying about this, should I stick with my pan/zoom feature?

I think since this is a more "how It feels like"question, I'd test the sizes myself. Is it hard to differentiate the blocks? How easy is it to actually tab a particular block? an X will do on a 3*3 block, but is it detectable? In my opinion, this is a prefect example of where game design comes into play. Everyone would recognize 1 pixel, but when does the block size and the resulting grid make fun?
