Feature Requests on feedback.unity3d.com or...?

I have this awesome request for a new feature in Unity. I have reported it through the Bug Reporter tool that comes with Unity, but I haven't heard anything yet.

What is the benefit of requesting new features at feedback.unity3d.com instead of using the Bug Reporter or support@unity3d.com for that?

You can get an easy overview of which requests already exist and it is also the easiest way to see how popular certain feature requests are by voting on already requested features.

You can vote for multiple features, using a max. of 3 out of your total of 10 votes. So all in all it provides a collection of what the community wants and is the ideal place to start looking when you have an awesome idea for a new feature for Unity. Somebody might have thought of that feature before, so you can vote for it.

You will not get this kind of overview when using an email or the bug reporter and it makes it hard for UT to find out how popular a certain feature is. So feedback.unity3d.com is the method of choice.

  • on this. Are there any caveats in feedback.unity3d.com, that we should be aware of?

Not a whole lot, other than you get limited votes (to encourage picking your battles) and new requests are likely to remain at the bottom of the pile.

Actually, considering the limited votes, I'd rather it allowed to assign as many as you want to a single issue, but you can add a maximum of 3.

I think the limited votes are an advantage, otherwise you wouldn't prioritize on what's really important to you and just vonte on anything that sounds decent. New requests being neglected could be an issue. You have the tab of "new requests" so they should show up there for a while. Once they are not new anymore, it will be very hard to actually vote up a new and great idea unless you specifically search for it (which is what you should do, but most people probably don't). I suspect a lot of users just visit the site, look through the first 2 pages and vote on what sounds neat.

I also like the fact that feedback.unity3d.com makes it very transparent for the user which requests have been implemented already by UT and which are accepted to be implemented in the future. Transparency is always a plus and it gives the user the sense of actually contributing to the evolution of Unity. Are old and unvoted requests disposed of at some point? We got 19 pages with most requests never having a chance of being implemented. Are they deleted at some stage?
