in very simple explanation it means the size of the sprite so 100 pixel per unit return the actual size of the sprite 50 will maximize the sprite twice tray it by your self
so what should be ideal pixel per unit for a) 53 x 42 sprite b) 32 x 32 sprite
you have to understand pixel per unit is for re sizing so keep the value of 100 if you don't want to resize the sprite & if you want to re size advice you to re size before importing to unity to avoid any pixel losing & always keep pixel per unit @ 100.
