Problem with UI Text

Hello, I'm pretty new to unity and trying to make a text show up on the screen to show how many lives the player has.

The problema i'm having is that when the background on the screen does not have alpha the text doesnt show. alt text

If i choose the background then click on color and decrease the alpha then the text appear.

Any ideas?
