UI Text not showing up in play mode

I have an issue with the UI Text not appearing when I enter into play mode; however, it appears as it is supposed to in the game view when play mode is off. I'm wondering if some setting I'm missing or have checked is messing with my UI text appearing in play mode. I've attached a screenshot of my canvas inspector if that is of any help -- the UI text is the number "30" on the top right in the game view. I have also made sure that the GUI layer component is checked on my main camera, so that shouldn't be the problem.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I am also using Oculus and that probably has a factor into this as well.
